Stamped & Decorative Concrete

Stamped concrete is a technique where we press patterns into wet concrete to mimic other materials. The result looks like brick, stone, slate, or even wood planks. But underneath, it is still concrete with all the benefits that come with it. You get the appearance of expensive pavers or natural stone without the high cost or maintenance headaches. Decorative concrete goes beyond stamping to include coloring, staining, engraving, and other techniques that make plain concrete look custom and intentional.

Why would you choose stamped or decorative concrete over the real thing? Cost is one reason. Natural stone and quality pavers are expensive. Labor to install them properly adds to the price. Stamped concrete costs a fraction of that. Maintenance is another factor. Pavers can shift over time, allowing weeds to grow between the gaps. Stone can crack or become uneven. Concrete stays flat and solid. You do not have to worry about individual pieces moving or settling at different rates.

The technique works on new pours and can sometimes be applied over existing concrete with an overlay. Installing stamped concrete requires skill and timing. The process is similar to a standard concrete pour, but with additional steps. Here is how it works:

• •Preparation: We prepare the site just like any concrete project. This includes excavation, base installation, and setting forms. Proper prep is critical because stamped concrete is only as good as what is underneath it.
• •Pouring the Concrete: We pour the concrete and level it. The mix needs to be strong enough to hold the stamped pattern without crumbling. We use reinforcement like rebar or wire mesh to prevent cracking.
• •Color Application: There are two main ways to add color. One is to mix the color directly into the concrete. The other is to apply a color hardener on top of the wet concrete. We often use both methods for depth and realism. A release agent is also applied to prevent the stamps from sticking to the concrete.
• •Stamping: This is where the magic happens. We press stamping mats into the concrete while it is still workable. The mats leave an imprint that creates the pattern. Timing is everything. If we stamp too early, the pattern will not hold. If we wait too long, the concrete will be too hard to stamp. Our crew knows exactly when to move.
• •Detailing: After stamping, we add details like texture and grout lines. This makes the pattern look more realistic. We also cut control joints to manage cracking. These joints are placed strategically so they blend with the pattern.
• •Curing and Sealing: The concrete needs to cure before we apply sealer. Sealer protects the surface and enhances the color. It also makes the concrete easier to clean and more resistant to stains. We recommend resealing every few years to keep it looking fresh.

Maintenance for stamped concrete is straightforward. Sweep it regularly to remove dirt and debris. Hose it down or power wash it once or twice a year. Avoid using deicing salts in winter, as they can damage the sealer and the concrete. If you notice the sealer wearing off, contact us to reapply it.
